Development opportunities

The Shire of Christmas Island and Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands are progressing a number of urban renewal programmes, concepts and masterplans. This has included two commercial precincts for Cocos (Keeling) Islands and on Christmas Island the Gaze Road Tourism and Commercial Precinct and Vagabond Road Sports and Recreation Precinct plans.

There has been progress on the outline development plans for the light industrial land on Christmas Island and the former Quarantine Station on Cocos (Keeling) Islands with work also being undertaken on an outline development plan for Buffet Close for expansion of residential development on Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

A wide range of initiatives aimed at increasing the economic outlook in the areas of educational facilities and training standards, tourism development, construction, horticulture and aquaculture are being undertaken.

New housing, shopping and business opportunities with high-quality facilities will enhance the already deep sense of community that exists.

Growth and sustainability within the tourism sector is supported by a local network that includes Christmas Island Tourism Association and Cocos (Keeling) Island Tourism Association.
